USD383 Breaks Ground for MHS West Campus Construction
Principal Terry McCarty, far right in hard hat, is speaking in the photo, flanked by Dr. Bob Shannon, Superintendent of USD383, representatives of the architectural and construction firms, and the USD383 School Board. McCarty thanked the citizens of Manhattan for voting for the Bond Issue which made this $40 million addition and the renovations to the older building possible. (No more 50-year-old bathrooms!) As McCarty said in his short and happy speech, now the building will be of the same top caliber as the students and teachers that have always been within it! (See article below)
MHS earns Newsweek recognition again For the second year in a row, Manhattan High School is one of America’s Best High Schools, according to the criteria set by Newsweek Magazine. Improving on last year’s ranking, Principal Terry McCarty was thrilled, but not surprised. In an interview by the Manhattan Mercury, McCarty congratulated the students, faculty, and staff of Manhattan High School for this terrific accomplishment. MHS had a Challenge Index of 1.258 this year, up from last year's rating of 1.094. "For us to move that much is incredible," McCarty said. This puts MHS in the top 5 percent of all US public schools rated this way. (Newsweek’s Challenge Index is the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2007 divided by the number of graduating seniors.) Making the list required a Challenge index of 1.00 or greater and just over 1600, or 6%, of the 27,000 Public schools ranked, did so. MHS was one of only eight schools recognized in Kansas. "MHS also has 26 percent of seniors passing at least one AP exam before they graduate, which is well above the 16 percent national average." McCarty added that this improvement is an indication of how well the school is preparing students for college and careers after graduating. and he attributed this to good kindergarten through eighth grade schooling as well, "developing a foundation for our kids," he said.
